For the carriage of goods by sea, a universal document is used - a bill of lading. The document obliges the transport company to transfer the goods from the shipper to the recipient. The bill of lading contains information about the movement of cargo, from which port and when it was sent, as well as information that is used for customs clearance - information about the cargo.

Fixes the loading on board the ship;
Allows the recipient to pick up the shipment.

If the consignee is not indicated in the bill of lading, then it becomes negotiable. In other words, the right to the cargo can be transferred or sold en route. Then the bill of lading has a new function, it becomes a security.

The bill of lading does not have a single form. Therefore, each shipping line draws up a document in a different way. Typically, the carrier prints the data on its letterhead in triplicate. One for the sender, the second for the carrier, the third for the recipient.
